Between Dress Sizes? A Better Way to Decide

When your measurements fall across two dress sizes, “always size up” and “always size down” are both incomplete answers. The useful choice depends on…

Find the area that controls the fit

A close-fitting bodice may depend on bust and underbust measurements, while a narrow skirt may be limited by the hips and stride. Compare all listed measurements, not only the waist. If the dress has a fixed waistband, structured cups or a fitted lining, ask how those elements affect sizing.

Confirm stretch rather than guessing from photographs

A smooth or shiny surface does not tell you how much a fabric stretches. The lining can also limit movement even if the outer layer gives slightly. Ask whether the chart shows body measurements or garment dimensions and whether any stretch is already allowed for. Avoid ordering a smaller size because you expect the dress to relax.

Discuss alterations before placing the order

A larger size is only useful if the areas that need adjustment can be altered appropriately. Taking in a simple seam is different from reshaping draping, moving a neckline or changing decorated panels. Request advice on the specific design, along with cost and timing from the alteration provider. Do not make a purchase dependent on an unconfirmed repair.

Describe the fit you want

Tell the seller whether you prefer a close silhouette or more ease for a long seated event. Share current measurements, the product link and your event date. For example, compare the construction questions raised by Audrey Dress and Cecilia Dress, then request individual sizing guidance. Check the applicable exchange policy before purchasing, particularly if you request custom work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose the smallest size that closes?

No. A zip closing does not establish comfortable fit. Check breathing, sitting and movement as well.

Can I rely on reviews about sizing?

Reviews can add context, but another person’s preferred fit does not replace your measurements and the design’s own chart.
