Take three measurements without tightening the tape
Measure around the fullest part of the bust, the natural waist and the fullest part of the hips. Stand naturally and keep the tape parallel to the floor. It should sit against the body without compressing it. Repeat each measurement to catch a tilted tape or an accidental change in posture. Record the unit alongside every number.
Use the underlayers you expect to wear
A different bra or underlayer can change how a fitted dress sits. Measure in the intended foundation garments when practical, rather than over bulky clothing. Do not subtract centimetres to make a size chart work. A smaller number on paper does not create extra room in a garment.
Distinguish body measurements from garment measurements
A dress measured flat is not the same as the circumference of your body. Garments also need appropriate room for movement, depending on their cut and fabric.
